However, only if they are marinated in olive oil, as a scientific study shows.

Spanish scientists included older people with prediabetes, who are at high risk of developing diabetes mellitus, in their study. A group of seniors asked them to eat a can of 200g of oil sardines once a week in addition to their normal diet. The other group continued to eat normally, without the extra portion of oily fish.

Before the start of the study and after one year of a prescribed diet, the study participants were examined for their risk of diabetes. While 37% of the participants in the sardine group had a high risk of developing diabetes before the start of the study, it was only 8% at the end. The risk of diabetes also fell in the control group in the sense of a placebo effect. But only from 27% before the study to 22% after the study.

Sardines Are Very Rich In Micronutrients

So what could be the reason why 200g of oil sardines per week is so healthy?

Well first it's the fats. The fish themselves contain plenty of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. There is also olive oil, which does not contain any omega-3 fatty acids, but is classified as healthy because of other unsaturated fatty acids.

In addition, sardines contain iron, iodine, calcium, copper, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B6, biod vitamin D, all micronutrients that are absolutely necessary for healthy development .

Sardines marinated in oil are available in every supermarket in Germany. If you want to enrich your diet with oil sardines for health reasons, you should make sure that the fish are marinated in olive oil.

The study results only apply to the combination of sardines plus olive oil. There are no relevant study results for products with other oils.
